SAN MARCOS (February 20, 2013) – Palomar College’s diesel technology program received a $10,000 boost recently from Hawthorne Machinery and Caterpillar Equipment, through the Caterpillar Dealer Excellence Program. Hawthorne is the local dealer for Caterpillar in the San Diego area.
Jim Champany, Hawthorne General Service Manager, presented a check to College officials at the February Governing Board meeting. He commented, “We appreciate that Palomar College provides students that are prepared, ready and engaged for the workforce.”
Receiving the check were Sergio Hernandez, Palomar College Associate Professor in Diesel Technology; Governing Board President Nancy Chadwick; Wilma Owens, Dean of Career, Technical and Extended Education; and Superintendent/President Robert P. Deegan.
Owens said that in addition to the students benefitting from the scholarships, “Hawthorne provides faculty experts whenever we need them, which is of great value to our program.”
According to Hernandez, the Dealer Excellence Program is set up so that the dealer donates $5,000 and then Caterpillar Corporation adds matching funds to total $10,000. The first $5,000 goes directly to fund five student scholarships at $1,000 each. The remainder of the funds is used for promoting and enhancing the program with such things as equipment and training for instructors.
Hernandez encouraged qualifying students to apply for one of the five scholarships available for 2013. Applicants must be enrolled in either the Palomar College diesel mechanics technology certificate or associates of science degree program, and carry a minimum of six credits per semester.
