SAN MARCOS (July 31, 2006) -- Palomar College’s Computer Science and Information Systems (CSIS) Department is offering a new Oracle Database Administrator (DBA) program geared toward preparing a student to take Oracle’s DBA certification exam.
Scott Wallihan, who will teach all of the core classes, has many years of experience teaching Oracle. Last year, he led a group of Camp Pendleton Marines bound for Iraq in the completion of this Oracle certification training.
Wallihan said that his lectures will “highlight the new features of Oracle
10g, and students will be prepared to attempt Oracle 10g certification. Our program provides a broad treatment of Oracle that is most appropriately geared to traditional students of computer science, and experienced IT professionals who are adding Oracle to their existing skill set.”
Classes will be taught in a hands-on lab where students can get the experience necessary to administer Oracle themselves. Oracle will be installed on Linux servers. Wallihan said, “Because most commercial employers in San Diego run Oracle on Solaris, it is important for students to learn to install and manage Oracle on UNIX. For us, Linux is the most sensible choice. As such, I have scheduled a brief introduction to Linux as the first hands-on lab exercise, and the installation of Oracle 10g, on Linux, as the second lab exercise.” Previous experience with Linux is not required.
The Oracle DBA program can be completed within one year.
Fall semester at Palomar begins August 19. The Oracle DBA I class (CSIS 256) will meet starting that week, on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6 - 9:50 p.m. at the college’s San Marcos campus. For more information, those interested may call the CSIS Department office at 760-744-1150, ext. 2387, or contact Wallihan directly at scottwallihan@hotmail.com.
