Foxtail pine habitat is cool and dry in summer, cold and wet in winter. Mean annual precipitation at my Golden Trout Camp study site (3231 m a.s.l.) is about 400 mm. Eighty percent of annual precipitation falls during the winter. Summer thunderstorms produce at least 25 mm of precipitation between June and October about once every three years. Temperatures are mild in summer and cold in winter. Temperature extremes in the 34-year record at Golden Trout Camp are: 24 C maximum, and -15 C minimum.
