FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How can I get into the Medical Assisting Program?

You need only register and enroll in the classes. There are no prerequisites or special application procedures. Students must be eighteen years of age prior to the Clinical experience (CE 100 or MA 70) and must meet certain health requirements before this practical experience. This externship (clinical experience) should be taken in the last semester of training.

How long will it take to get a Certificate?

The Administrative Certificate may be completed in approximately 11 months, if you attend fulltime. If you desire to complete the Clinical Certificate or both certificates, it will require three semesters of classes. You may also complete either or both certificates on a part-time basis.

Do you have night classes in Medical Assisting?

Many classes are offered at night. However, Clinical Medical Assisting Laboratory classes (MA 65 and MA 66) and Introduction to Medical Assisting (MA 50) are presently offered ONLY during the day.

How do I get Certified or Re-certified?

(Often confused with licensed, registered, other such terms)

Palomar College issues a Certificate to students who successfully (minimum grade of "C") complete one or both of the MA Certificate programs. This Certificate is usually all that is necessary to obtain employment. In addition, private organizations offer testing to trained or experienced medical assistants and will issue certification based on passing their exam. One such organization is listed here and will send written information regarding exam dates and locations and provide a study guide for their exam.
