MEDICAL ASSISTING CERTIFICATES |

Provides specific skills for entry-level positions as a clinical and/or administrative assistant in a physician's office or medical clinic. Courses within the program also serve to prepare students for employment in a number of related health occupations in hospitals and other health care facilities. A Certificate of Achievement with Specialization in Clinical Medical Assisting will be awarded to students who successfully complete the 28.5-31.5 units. A Certificate of Achievement with Specialization in Administrative Medical Assisting will be awarded to students who successfully complete the 26-32 units.

**MA 70 Supervised Clinical Experience Ten and one-half hours laboratory (3.5) Prerequisite: A minimum grade of "C" in MA 50, 55, 56, 65 and 66. Current CPR Basic "C" Certificate. A Physical Examination and Physician's Report (free of infectious disease and physically and emotionally able to perform the duties of the MA 70 class). Proof of the following: Tuberculin Test (PPD), Tetanus/Diphtheria immunization, Rubella/Measles Vaccine, and Hepatitis B Vaccine (first in the series of 3 must be received a minimum of 10 days prior to day 1 of MA 70 class). Must be 18 years of age prior to day 1 of clinical experience.

MEDICAL ASSISTING
CORE (COMMON) COMPETENCIES: Roles and functions of Medical Assistant: Professional Relations: Conduct and ethics. Legal Responsibilities: Professional liability, Medical Practice Act, preventing lawsuits. Communication Skills: Telephone techniques, courtesy and voice; taking messages; written correspondence; instructing patients. Medical Terminology: Read, write and recognize meanings of medical terms. Practical Skills: Clinical: 168 hours minimum externship in an appropriate facility (MA 70). Admin: 120 hours minimum externship in an appropriate facility (CE 100).
CLINICAL COMPETENCIES: Vital Signs : Take and record temperature, pulse, respiration and blood pressure. Weigh and measurepatients. Examination: Position and drape patients for physical and specialty examinations. Chart objectiveinformation and observations. Sterilization and Disinfection: Sanitize and wrap autoclave articles and equipment.Disinfection: Wrap for autoclaving. Operate autoclave. Perform chemical disinfection.Minor Office Surgery: Set-up: minor surgery tray. Sterile dressing changes and bandaging.Administration: Calculate dosage and administer oral and injectible medications.Site of Medication: selection and administration of IM, subcutaneous, and intradermal injection.Laboratory : Specimen collection and testing and / or venipuncture.Microbiological : Specimen collectionElectrocardiography: Record a 12 lead ECG.Emergency : Perform first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).

Pharmacy calls.Appointing Patients : Scheduling, canceling, legal implications.Computer Skills : Business letters. Medical histories, reports and forms. Medical transcription.Records Management : Filing methods. Patient record (lab, x-ray, consultation reports, etc.).Bookkeeping: Double-entry, accounts receivable and accounts payable.Banking: Deposits and reconciling statements.Payroll : Employee records. State and federal withholding taxes.Fees, Billing and Procedures : Billing and collection of fees.Equipment: Operating computer and word processor.Health Insurance : Filling out forms, coding procedures for private and government companies including SDI,Worker's Compensation, Medi-Cal and Medicare.
