Instruction & Information Competency

Instruction

Upon the request of course instructors, librarians provide customized library instruction sessions designed to help students complete course assignments and improve students' information competency skills.

Information Competency

In support of its Mission, the Palomar College Library collaborates with faculty from various academic departments to assess and improve students' information competency skills.  WASC defines information competency as the "capability to access, evaluate, and use information in fulfillment of coursework and independent study." (ACCJC/WASC Accreditation Standards).

  • Computer Literacy & Information Competency (CLIC) at Palomar College
  • Information Competency Student Learning Outcomes - The library created a set of information competency learning outcomes to assess library instruction and to promote the integration of information competency across the curriculum.
  • Faculty/Librarian Collaboration - Palomar Librarians are willing and interested in working with faculty to integrate information competency into course curricula.  We will consult with faculty to:
    • Develop course specific information competency student learning outcomes
    • Create successful research assignments
    • Teach and assess information competency skills
  • Instructional Materials - the Palomar Library has a bank of information competency instructional materials that course instructors may integrate into their courses.  Please contact Katy French for more information.
  • Information Competency Resources - the following sources provide greater definition and rationale for information competency education.
