Women's History Month Book Display 2009

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), Coral Reef Information Service (CoRIS) quotes Turgoen and Asch' description of coral reefs as " ... unique ... and complex systems. Rivaling old growth forests in longevity of their ecological communities, well-developed reefs reflect thousands of years of ... reef formations." Another online document, Coral Reefs of the Indo-Pacific, defines coral reefs a representation of " ...  geologic structures built over time by living organisms ... ". It goes on to explain that as one of two types of biogenic limestone reefs coral reefs are " ... the accumulated remains of the skeletons of lime-secreting organisms, primarily ... corals ..." It is in fact a " ... thin living veneer of tissue lives on and builds upon the skeletal remains of past generations of corals Unfortunately a combination of natural and human threats  are contributing to the disappearance of this sophisticated environment throughout the world.  The global coral reef crisis is monitored by groups such as the Global Coral Reef Monitoring Network (GCRMN) and the art of The International Coral Reef Initiative (ICRI).
