Dear listener,
I don't like to use KKSM as a soapbox to air views or opinions but I feel
that I must as this issue affects not only us but many other radio
stations across the country.
The Copyright Royalty Board (or the Ungrateful Dead as I like to call
them) recently ruled to increase webcasters' royalty rates between 300 and
1500 percent over the next five years. This ruling puts several webcasters
in jeopardy and not in the Alex Trebek way.
KKSM broadcasts on our 500 watt 1320AM signal and on Cox Digital Cable
Channel 957 to reach our San Diego audience. When we began online
streaming we were able to reach a whole new worldwide audience. In the
past years we have received numerous e-mails from Russia, Peru, Singapore,
Germany, South Africa, and more. We even received a letter from a soldier
serving in Iraq. Our audience has grown rapidly all thanks to our internet
streaming.
As a non-commercial educational station, we offer hands-on experience to
students in the Radio and Television program at Palomar College. It is a
unique and rewarding experience for all students involved who wish to
pursue a career in broadcasting. The webstreaming offers a whole new
dimension to the educational experience at KKSM.
We are proud to endorse HR 2060 - The Internet Radio Equality Act.
We urge all of our listeners to
contact your local representative. Don't stop with an e-mail!
Call them, send them a letter, visit their office, bake them a pie, write
a rock opera dedicated to them - whatever you do just tell them to support
HR 2060 and to say NO
to the Copyright Royalty Board's decision.
