Uniform Code

1. Student dress must conform to the dress code of Palomar College and the facility where the student is assigned for clinical experience. Any student who does not conform to uniform regulations will be asked to leave the facility and return appropriately attired. This will constitute an absence. Professional attire, attitudes and behavior are expected of all nursing students in the clinical setting and while representing the Nursing Education Department at special functions.
2. Students may select and purchase their own uniforms. Uniform dress will meet the following criteria:
a. Female Students
i. White uniform dress, pantsuits, culottes, slacks, or skirts (no denim or skorts).
ii. Knee length or longer.
iii. Tops button, snap or zip front closure and/or collar.
iv. Lightweight or low neckline tops require a white undershirt white (turtleneck is acceptable).
v. A slip worn with dresses and skirts.
vi. Hosiery white or tan free of holes or runs.
vii. Lightweight white cotton socks may be worn with slacks.
viii. Plain untrimmed white ankle socks may be worn with hosiery.
b. Male Students
i. White trousers (no denim) and shirt.
ii. Tops button, snap or zip front closure and/or collar.
iii. Lightweight or low neckline tops require a white undershirt (white turtleneck is acceptable).
iv. Hosiery white only and free of holes.
c. Both Male and Female Students
i. Uniform appropriately tailored and styled to body build.
ii. Uniform laundered daily and pressed.
iii. White belts worn with slacks.
iv. Pants with drawstring cord will be covered by uniform top.
v. Pants with a knit cuff or elastic wrap at the ankle are not acceptable.
d. Shoes
i. White leather (may have muted labeling)
ii. Polished/shined and shoe laces clean
iii. Closed at toes and heels.
iv. Clogs with a strap are permitted.
3. The school patch is to be worn on the left sleeve, 6" from the shoulder seam. The red stripe (seam binding) should be placed directly below. School patches may be purchased in the Bookstore. If sleeves are 3/4 length or without a shoulder seam, see instructor for correct placement of patch and stripes (see example on the following page).
4. White Standard Lab coats, with school patch and stripes may be worn over street clothes to hospital facility, when there for business other than direct clinical experience. Lab coats may also be worn over the uniform when not giving direct client care. The sleeves of the lab coat will be 3/4 length or longer and the coat must be large enough to be buttoned down the front. Elastic or knit cuffs on sleeves are acceptable.
5. For clinical experiences where uniforms are not required, wear slacks, skirt or dress (knee length), closed-toe shoes, and a lab coat with the official Palomar patch and stripe.
6. Accessories include red and black pens, pencil, small notepad, bandage scissors, pen light, Kelly forceps, watch with second hand or digital readout, name pin, and stethoscope. The Palomar Nursing Student name pin and badge must be worn when in any clinical facility in a student nurse capacity.
7. Dress code for Psychiatric Nursing is different from above uniform code. Instructions are given at beginning of course.
8. No jewelry is to be worn with the uniform. Exceptions are a wristwatch, and if married, a plain wedding band. One small post earring in each ear lobe may be worn. No other jewelry is allowed.
9. Fingernails will be short and neatly trimmed. No polish or artificial nails. eff. 8/02
10. Hair will be worn off the collar and off the face at all times when in uniform. The hair should be simply styled. If hair is long, it will be pulled back, braided, or pulled up off the collar without ribbons, bows or nets.
11. Eliminate all fragrances (i.e. body splash, hair spray, perfume, after-shave) and only light cosmetics are to be used.
12. Chewing gum is prohibited in the clinical area.
13. Cover all tattoos with uniform.
14. All visible body piercing jewelry will be removed for clinical assignments.
Names of uniform vendors are available by contacting the Health Programs Specialist (ext. 2279). "Recycled" uniforms are also available from previous graduates! This information will be available at the new student orientation.
