Advice for High School Counselors and Students

Classes to take in High School
1.  ENGLISH (3-4yr) Needed to comprehend the medical terminology and nursing college-level texts.
2.  CHEMISTRY One year of high school chemistry
3.  BIOLOGY One semester to 1 year
4.  ANATOMY One semester is recommended
Note: These science courses will promote success in the required college level courses
 5.  MATHEMATICS  Two years (to include high school algebra)
Note: The SAT or ACT tests are no longer required for program entry at Palomar College, however most 4 year colleges require them.  Plan to take the SAT during your senior year.
Classes to take at Palomar College (after high school graduation) If taking Anatomy, Physiology and Microbiology courses at other colleges courses must have labs and be 4 - 5 units.
1.  ANATOMY  ZOO 200   
2.  PHYSIOLOGY  ZOO 203
3.  MICROBIOLOGY  MICRO 200
Need at least 2.5 (C+) GPA in these classes for entry into Palomar’s program.  A BSN (Bachelors of Science in Nursing) program might  require a 3.00 (B) or higher
4. MATH Intermediate Algebra or test out
Suggested Non-Academic Preparation
Volunteer at any health care agency
 Interview an RN or a student in our program
Visit your school's career center and research the RN as a career
Take a certified nursing assistant (CNA) course. Try out nursing.  You can work as a CNA while going to school.

Success Rate: 90-100% of our graduates pass the RN Licensing Exam on the first attempt.

CNA: Certified Nurse Assistant: Formal training through MiraCosta College, ROP or by testing   out after successful completion of Palomar first semester nursing course.
LVN: Licensed Vocational Nurse: MiraCosta College and Maric
RN (ADN) Palomar College
RN (BSN & MSN): SDSU, other state colleges & private colleges
