Information Regarding Foreign Nurses and Evaluation of Foreign Transcripts

Foreign RN Information:

In order to determine if the foreign license is equivalent to the US license the foreign
nurse should:

1.   Apply for the NCLEX (National Council Licensure Examination).
The application and fees will be valid for one year.

BRN  (916) 322-3350
P.O. Box 944210
Sacramento, CA  94244-2100

2.   The Board of Registered Nursing (BRN) will then evaluate the foreign license and send a letter noting the missing items/classes (i.e., Psych rotation) or
state that it is equivalent and that the student may sit for the licensure exam.

Palomar's College’s Nursing Program content
           Nursing 118 (9 units) Maternity, Pediatrics & Medical/Surgical
           Nursing 217 (9 units) Psychiatric & Geriatric & Medical/Surgical

(Note: Palomar's courses are NOT offered in units less than a semester in length. Therefore, even though the foreign nurse may be lacking only one of the components (i.e., psychiatric), they must complete the entire semester length course).

3.   The Foreign Nurse presents a copy of the letter from the BRN verifying the need for the missing content to the Health Programs Specialist  in the Nursing Education Department

      (N. O. Building) (See map).

The foreign nurse may enter the program on a  space available basis to complete only the needed course.  She must comply with all medical and clinical clearances.

Evaluation of Foreign Transcripts:

If a student needs foreign coursework evaluated to determine if nursing program prerequisites or AA degree requirements are met, they should obtain the address of the approved agency from the college's Evaluations Office.   The student will send transcripts, etc. to the agency (There is a fee for this service). Student should be reminded that there are time limits on Anatomy/Physiology/Microbiology courses and a 2 yr. time limit on transferring nursing course content.

U. S. HIGH SCHOOL EQUIVALENCY:

Applicants should submit a copy of their foreign high school diploma when applying. Efforts will be made to determine equivalency using  reference materials.  Students may also take the GED exam.
