TUTORING PROGRAMS
Program Description
The GEAR UP tutoring program at Washington Middle School provides academic assistance before, in-class, and with the YMCA after school program. Students from local colleges or universities are hired through Palomar College and placed into classrooms, upon teacher request, to work either one on one, in small groups, or with the class as a whole. The tutoring program is our way to help ensure that all GEAR UP scholars receive services that build and encourage advanced academic achievement.
Hours of Operations
7:45am – 3:23pm, M-F
3:30pm – 4:30pm, M-F (YMCA)
The YMCA after school program offers a homework hour from 3:30pm-4:30pm,
Mon-Fri. GEAR UP partners with this program and provides tutor assistance to help check off student homework, as well as binder organization. The YMCA continues until 6:00pm with a variety of clubs and recreational activities the participants can choose from. Costs
The tutoring program is FREE of charge to all GEAR UP students at Washington Middle School . The YMCA after school program is also free to all Washington Middle School students who would like to sign up and be committed to attending regularly.
Benefits
Tutoring can be a valuable tool for students seeking more understanding in certain subject areas, as well as for students making good grades and are seeking to increase their academic level. The tutoring sessions will give students a chance to finish homework, get answers to questions about their schoolwork outside of normal class times, and learn valuable study skills.
Tutors can also answer many questions for students regarding college life, or life in high school. Tutors also serve as mentors and chaperones during many of our cultural and academic field trips. All tutors are AVID certified and are trained on a regular basis on different tutoring methods.
How to Sign Up
During the school day students are assigned to tutors by teachers.
**Special arrangements can be made to accommodate students during lunch hours or before school. Please call the GEAR UP Office at 724-7115, ext. 2308 for these requests.
YMCA After School Program- Please pick up a packet in the WMS front office, or stop by the GEAR UP office to pick one up. Students may stay after school once forms are fully completed and submitted to the YMCA.
