High school seniors introduced to college life
Three-day camp begins at Cal State San Marcos
Nearly 100 incoming high school seniors are taking three days off from their summer vacation to participate in a camp hosted by Palomar College that prepares low-income students to enter and succeed in fields related to science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

Raquel English, a senior at Mission Hills High School in San Marcos, first volunteered with a group called Peer Leaders Uniting Students because she thought it would look good on a college application.
Now, the 17-year-old says being a friend to fellow students means a lot more.

San Marcos High School was once again host to the Girls Empowerment Summit where young girls are encouraged to be proud of who they are and discover what they are capable of.

Students GEAR UP for PACE
Recently, students from Mission Hills High School attended a Partners Advancing College Education (PACE) field trip at CSUSM. This academic partnership between SMUSD and CSUSM provides key goals: focus on college at an EARLY stage, PREPARE for a rigor of college work, opportunities for students regardless of background or financial means and guarantee admission to CSUSM. The GEAR UP program is also in collaboration with the success of PACE. The PACE Promise is starting with the class of 2009 for admissions to CSUSM. The Palomar College GEAR UP Program supports and encourages students to start thinking "college & careers" in middle school. PACE is an excellent corner stone to a four year college. The city of San Marcos is the ideal college town. You have a state of the art middle school, high school and college. Palomar College is now under way to refurbishing it's 60 year old campus. And now with the new train leading to CSUSM, San Marcos is a unique and prime place for college education and work. GEAR UP Holds Mentor Training
Recently, the Rancho Buena Vista GEAR UP Partnership Program held a ice-cream social after a Mentoring Workshop class. Tutoring is the largest component. All tutors are mentors and serve as liaisons from their college campus. Students learn first hand what it is like to attend a local college. Tutors/mentors bring guidance, college knowledge and motivation which are key tools for going to college. As we say at GEAR UP "If I Plan To Learn ,, I Must Learn to Plan". Local GEAR UP staff help young high school students prepare scholarship applications. The "Save Me a Spot in College" scholarship contest is a different approach to the previously tried scholarship contests and allows students to submit a written application, poster form application or a video formatted application.

Young girls are being encourage to become a part of the Adelante Mujer initiative, which advocates the mentorship and overall educational awareness in regards to young Latina women. Adelante Mujer is a networking community which offers mentoring opportunities for young women as well as information regarding college and opportunities for scholarships and financial aid.

Cougar's College is a summer event sponsored by the Gear Up program at Palomar and hosted at Cal State:
University: San Marcos. This program allows young high school students from both San Marcos and Vista unified schools districts
to experience college life and attend events and lectures that will prepare them for the rigors of post-secondary educations.
