Frequently Asked Questions - What is a FAFSA?

The FAFSA is the Free Application for Federal Student Aid.

You will need to file the FAFSA, preferably before March 2, each  year that you wish to receive financial aid.

By completing the FAFSA you are applying for federal and state student grants, work-study and student loans. 

Please note that for state and college aid you may also need to complete additional forms so contact your state educational agency or college about about this.

• Where do I get one?  Apply online at www.fafsa.ed. gov.
  
  

• How do I fill it out?
  

  • Below are some tips for completed your FAFSA. For a complete explanation and instructions for each section, visit the U.S. Dept. of Education's web site at www.fafsa.ed.gov. If you have questions, please call 1-800-4-FED-AID (1-800-433-3243) or visit the Student Financial Assistance Office web site.
    • Read the instructions.
    • Complete the entire form as accurately as possible, including all optional information.  Omitting this information may cause delays in processing.
    • Have your federal tax return (or your parent's tax return if you are under the age of 24) for the previous year handy because your FAFSA application will require you to enter information from your tax return.
    • List Palomar College as a college choice.  Our school code is 001260.
    • If you cannot complete your online application all at once, you can save your responses and then go back later to finish.
    • Keep a copy of your FAFSA, tax forms, and documents you use to complete the form.
    • Register for Selective Service if you are a male who is at least 18 years old and have not already registered.
  • Note:  If you were determined independent through a previous Review Process, or feel you have extenuating circumstances, you must complete a Request for Review of Dependency Status. 
    

• When is it Due?
  

  • You can file your  FAFSA anytime between January 1st and June 30th however there is a priority date set by Palomar College:

    • February 15th  is the priority date for mailing the FAFSA to the processor or filing electronically.  Apply early!! 

    • May 19th is the priority date for submitting requested file documentation to Palomar College.
