COURSE OBJECTIVE:
Understanding society, social change and its impact on our daily lives is of importance to us all. This course is designed to help you better understand social organization, the socialization process and change that occurs within society. It will cover social theory and methodology and give you a better understanding of human society from a sociological perspective.

REQUIREMENTS:

1. Video viewing
You are expected to view each of the twenty-six video lessons in the series. You will be required to write a half page summary on twenty-five of them and each summary will be worth four points. They will be due on the first class meeting after they have aired on television.

2. Exams
You will be given five exams covering the material assigned in the text. Each exam will be worth 100 points and you may drop your lowest score.

3. Grading
Grades are based on your best 4 of 5 exams, your 25 video summaries and your attendance at the seminars. The number of points you earn will determine your grade.

Best 4 exam scores -
100 x 4 = 400
Video summaries -
25 x 4 = 100
Total points possible -
500

Minimum points needed for grades A (90%)

  D (60%)

4. Makeup and drop policy
There are no provisions for make-up exams. If you miss one exam, that will count as your dropped exam. If you miss more than one exam, you should drop the class. If you decide you cannot complete the course, you should be sure to drop by the official deadline or you will fail the course.

I am on campus Tuesday nights for this class during the summer. I will be available to talk with you before and after each class and if you need to contact me between classes I will check my voice mail two or three times a week between sessions, as well as Tuesday nights before class.
