Congratulations!
By registering for this course, you have made a commitment
to the process of learning about music. This course is the
first step of a long, but happy and rewarding journey to
a deeper understanding and involvement in music. This syllabus
is a companion to the tapes entitled Notes on Music
that are aired on Adelphia Cablevision - Ch.67 & Cox
North - Ch.16 M-F 9:30-10:00am OR TH 2:30-5:00am. The tapes
(four lessons to each tape) may be checked out from the
Palomar College library, Escondido College Center Library,
or the Ramona, Mt. Carmel and Fallbrook College Centers
for your use at home. Use this syllabus as a guide while
viewing the tapes.
COURSE
OBJECTIVE:
A student completing this course will be able to write and
recognize musical notation symbols of traditional western
music. An understanding of the language used by musicians
to describe and perform musical scores will be developed.
Students will be able to recognize and notate pitch, write
major and minor scales, write and identify the quality of
triads, determine the key of a melody, and be able to name
the major and minor keys and their number of accidentals.
Rhythmic notation through the division of the beat into
eighth notes will be studied. A student completing this
course will be prepared to enter the first semester of music
theory study at the college level.
COURSE
REQUIREMENTS:
1. Attend all class sessions.
2. Turn in homework as assigned.
3. Practice music skills in computer lab using software
that comes with textbook.
4. Fulfill the concert attendance requirement of the course
(more about this later).
5. Successfully take the final examination at the last class
session.
REQUIRED
MATERIALS:
The following will be needed as you work with each tape:
TEXTBOOK
(required):
Nelson, Robert and Carl Christens. Foundations of Music,
A computer-assisted Introduction
New York: Wadsworth Publishing Company, 4th edition.
The textbook is a very valuable source in this course. It
will provide additional information and exercises you will
need to develop musical skills. It has a CD Rom disc that
comes with it. The book is not written in the same order
that the TV tapes are presented, so one will have to skip
around in the book. Just look in the table of contents to
access the subject you are studying in the tapes. Be sure
to use the CD Rom that comes with your book. It has excellent
drill exercises on many of the skills needed for this class.
If you have trouble putting the CD Rom on your computer
you may wish to phone the publisher directly for technical
assistance. The phone number is 1-800-423 0563. The publisher
is on the east coast, so phone when their offices are open.
SEMINAR
MEETINGS:
The following is a list of the five class meetings. The
sessions will meet in room D-4. The meetings are from 6:30
to 8:20 pm. Please bring with you the homework assignments
as specified in the syllabus, your textbook, pencil and
staff paper.
CONCERT
ATTENDANCE:
This assignment of attending live concerts is made to encourage
beginning musicians to experience music in a performance
situation. The concerts must be approved by the instructor.
Please check with the instructor as to whether or not a
concert is acceptable for credit. The concert must be one
hour in length in a structured presentation -- that is,
performer(s) or ensemble with the audience listening --
not eating, dancing or talking. Informal concerts are not
acceptable. At the first class meeting an announcement will
be made as to concerts that will be acceptable for this
requirement. Credit for concert attendance it given on the
basis of points. A total of 12 points must be accumulated
to receive an A grade for this portion of the class. Only
concerts attended during the current semester will count
to accumulate points. No jazz, rock, or popular concerts
will be accepted toward fulfilling the requirement. The
concert programs are to be retained by the student and turned
in with the cover sheet provided in the syllabus.
