Humanities Through the Arts:
Takes the viewpoint that while science and technology provide us with objective information about the world around us, we must look to the humanities for the subjective insights necessary for an understanding of ourselves and our society; among the humanities, it is the arts that reveal these values to us.

Humanities Through the Arts:
Focuses upon an awareness of self and society as it can be encouraged through a study of arts in Western culture from classical times to the Renaissance. The telecourse has been designed to help students answer as well as raise questions about their individual and societal expressions of value.

In this course, the humanities are approached through a study of seven major arts: film, drama, music, literature, painting, sculpture, and architecture. Each of these arts is considered from the perspective of historical development; the elements used in creating works of art; meaning and form expressed; and criticism or critical evaluation.

Course Goals:
The focus and approach of Humanities Through the Arts are reflected in five general course goals. The five goals of the course are to develop in students:

  1. Understanding of the influences of political, cultural, and scientific values through art.
  2. Knowledge of the elements and tools an artist uses to create a work of art.
  3. Awareness of the different ways of "seeing" a work of art.
  4. Understanding of the processes of criticism and evaluation.
  5. Appreciation of art as an expression of the human condition.
