TEXT: All You Really Need To Know, 2nd Edition, Dr. Ken Burns, Press Plus, National City, 2001.

1st Seminar Meeting: Saturday, June 29, San Marcos Campus, Rm O -11, 9-11:50a.m.

Broadcast begins: Monday June 17 or Sat June 22, 2002

Adelphia - Ch. 67 and Cox North - Ch. 16
M-F 9:00-9:30pm OR SAT 6:30-9:00pm

Course purpose:

To provide an opportunity for each student to learn and adopt ideas, choices, systems and methods that lead to success in college and in life. In addition, this course will include elements designed to promote understandings of diversity and socioeconomic differences.

General Course information

Telecourse Viewing:

There are 30 half hour videos that will be broadcast according to the ETV schedule which can be found online at the ETV website www.palomar.edu/etv. If the student does not have access to the broadcast cable network, the Learning Resource Center at the San Marcos main campus library, the Escondido Center Library, the Mt. Carmel, Fallbrook and Ramona College centers have the videos that can be checked out for home viewing according to existing policies. If you do not have a VCR at home you can reserve a VCR at the San Marcos Campus Library to view the videos there.

Attendance at Seminars:

The six mandatory seminar meetings will be held on the San Marcos main campus in Room
O -11 on the following dates: 6/29, 7/6, 7/13, 7/20, 7/27, 8/3. As stated, these seminars are a mandatory and an integral part of this telecourse. Additional video elements and chapter quizzes will be presented along with student exercises designed to enhance the learning experiences.

Assignments:

A number of small projects and several "concept" papers will be assigned throughout the semester. These will be introduced and explained by the instructor at the seminar meetings.

Grading and Due Dates:

Quiz grades, project grades, grades from the "Concept" papers and the Final Exam grade will determine your final grade in this class. Due dates will be assigned for each paper or project. Assignments coming in after the due date will receive a lower grade.

Quizzes:

The chapter quizzes administered at the Seminar meetings will cover the concepts and ideas introduced and covered by the Television presentations and explained in the textbook. Short answer and essay questions predominate.

Important dates to remember:
Last day to apply for a refund 6 wk July 5th 8 wk July 5th
Last day to add a course 6 wk June 29th 8 wk July 2nd
Last day to apply for a Credit/No Credit 6 wk July 8th 8 wk July 11th
Last day to drop without a "W" 6 wk July 5th 8 wk July 10th
Last day to drop with a "W" 6 wk July 15th 8 wk July 22nd


It is the student's responsibility to be familiar with these dates. Because the first Seminar meeting of this Telecourse falls nearly one week after the beginning of the semester, it is important for the student to begin viewing the TV segments as they are broadcast and not get behind in this important part of the course.

Make-up Policy:

Attendance at the six seminars is mandatory. Much of the material presented at these seminars cannot be repeated, viewed or shown at any other time. It is the student's responsibility to notify the instructor as soon as possible of any condition beyond the student's control that would cause that student to miss a seminar meeting.

If it becomes necessary for a student to miss a given seminar, that student must contact the instructor as soon as possible to discuss what part of the seminar could be made up and/or to discuss an extra credit assignment if one is available.

Dr. Burns is retired from Palomar College with over 30 years experience in Higher Education. He designed and developed the original College Success course at Palomar College, was a founding member of the Statewide Student Success Course Initiative, created the first Student Success Telecourse and authored the "All You Really Need to Know" textbook that backs the current telecourse.
