Course Description:
This course will cover human growth and development from prenatal through early, middle and late childhood development. The primary focus of instruction will be young children and developmentally appropriate practices, with a secondary focus on variables effecting development including culture, socioeconomics and nutrition.

Course Objectives:
As a result of the learning activities in this course, students will develop the ability to:

1. Understand and plan instructional activities for young children in an effort to promote the continued development of age appropriate skills.

2. Critique the effectiveness of preschool classroom instruction and techniques.

3. Explore other resources beyond the school setting, including those which provide therapeutic services, to broaden content curriculum knowledge.

4. Analyze and discuss the difference typically developing children's physical growth and development and those with special needs, then consequently adjusting instruction to meet all children's needs.

5. Describe and apply various child development theories to real life, modern situations.

Course Requirements:
This is a hands-on experiential class in which students will be required to observe children in actual classroom settings, critique classroom instruction, describe child development theories and visit agencies / schools providing a variety of educational services. Regular class attendance and participation is required. Assignments should be turned in on the dates specified. A late penalty of 10% will be assessed to those assignments turned in past the due date. No assignments will be accepted after August 14.

c) Observe a typically developing preschooler

The Child Observations:
The Instructor will provide a format for completing these assignments. Complete fully and maintain objectivity when observing children. Draw conclusions in the last section of the form where you are required to make subjective / interpretive comments on your observations. Select two (2) of the three options previously listed.

The Site Visit:
The Instructor will provide a format for completing this assignment. Respond to all questions, completing each section thoroughly. Select a site which an educator would use to support activities in the classroom environment.

Theorist Group Project:
This is a self graded group project which will be presented to the class on August 14. Each group will select a different theorist and will work together to prepare a creative and interesting 15 minute presentation in which all participants will play an active role. Charts and other visual aids are highly suggested. You may use the TV, an overhead projector or include a Power Point presentation. Please include the following:

  • The theorists life and his/her reasons and motivation for developing this theory
  • The theory in its entirety - include any controversy that may have arisen as a result of the theory
  • Mention at least 5 different sources from which you obtained your data (web sites, articles, books, texts)
  • Apply the theory to a minimum of three real life experiences that educators may face today. Point out why the theory is important to modern child care professionals. You may demonstrate this in a role play - have fun and be creative!

Grading Procedure:
Each assignment is worth the designated number of points as itemized in the "Course Requirements" section.

Grades are calculated as such:
90-100 points = A
80-89 points = B
70-79 points = C
60-69 points = D
0-59 points = F
