Text: PRACTICAL BUSINESS MATH PROCEDURES, Sixth Edition by Jeffrey Slater

Calculator: It is strongly recommended that you purchase and bring to class a small, inexpensive electronic calculator. This calculator may be used to complete homework assignments as well as all tests. You can purchase one in the $5-$10 range.

This course will cover a wide range of topics relating to the world of Business Math. All chapters in the textbook will be included in the following order:

Chapter 10 Simple Interest
Chapter 11 Promissory Notes, Simple Discount Notes, and the Discount Process
Chapter 12 Compound Interest and Present Value
Chapter 13 Annuities and Sinking Funds
Chapter 14 Installment Buying, Rule of 78, and Revolving Charge and Credit
Card Accounts
Chapter 15 The Cost of Home Ownership
Chapter 19 Sales, Excise, and Property Tax

Testing:

Two unit tests will be administered and will cover the following chapters:

Test #1 Chapters 1-8
Test #2 Chapters 9-14

All students are required to take a comprehensive final examination which will include all chapters 1-22 in the book.

Class Meetings:

The class will meet from 6:00-9:20 P.M. on the following Wednesday's during the Summer Term, 6/26, 7/3, 7/10, 7/17, 7/24, 7/31, 8/14. You are expected to be present at all class meetings.

Grading:

The average of your unit test scores will make up 50% of your semester grade. Class participation, projects, and homework will account for 20% of your grade and the final exam will account for 30% of your grade.

All test papers will be scored numerically. At the conclusion of the semester numerical averages will be converted to a letter grade on the following basis:

90%+ =A
80-89% =B
70-79% =C
60-69% =D
00-59% =F

Please note that there are no make-up tests in this course except under extreme circumstances. Notify me if you think you have one.

Your attention is called to the Important Dates and Deadlines Timetable below, particularly as it applies to the Add/Drop dates. This timetable is important if you change your registration status during the semester. Note the dates for dropping classes and withdrawal from college. Failure to adhere to these dates could result in an "F" grade.

Important Dates to remember:

Last day to apply for a refund 6 wk July 5th 8 wk July 5th
Last day to add a course 6 wk June 29th 8 wk July 2nd
Last day to apply for a Credit/No Credit 6 wk July 8th 8 wk July 11th
Last day to drop without a "W" 6 wk July 5th 8 wk July 10th
Last day to drop with a "W" 6 wk July 15th 8 wk July 22nd

Final Examination:

There will be a final examination administered on August 14th during the regularly scheduled class period.

Office Hours:

My office hours for this semester are 30 minutes before and/or after each class meeting. Please send me an e-mail if you would like to meet before or after a class.

General Information:

Besides buying your textbook, reading your textbook, and doing your assignments, there are nine things you can do to assist yourself in successfully finishing this, or any class:

1. Ask questions in class.
2. See your instructor about your class problems during his/her office hours.
3. Use the CD-ROM disk which is enclosed with your textbook..
4. Call the author's 800 number as indicated in your textbook.
5. Go to the Accounting/Business Math Lab and get help from a Lab Assistant.
6. Study with the videos in the Learning Resources Center on the bottom floor of the library. These are done by the author of your text.
7. Go to the Tutorial Center in the Learning Resources Area of the library (bottom floor) and get help from a tutor.
8. Get help from a friend.
9. Hire a tutor on your own.
