Course Number and Title: N ESL 301 Beginning ESL I
 
Number of Semester Hours: 48 to 192 Lecture/Lab

Scope of Course:
Listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills for non-native speakers of English at the low-beginning level.
 
Specific Course Objectives:
Upon successful completion of the course the student will be able to:
  1. Indicate problems in communication;
  2. Give two- to three-word basic everyday instructions/directions/commands;
  3. Request assistance, inquire about and state time, and provide basic personal information related to the context;
  4. Express ability/inability;
  5. Write greetings or other goodwill messages;
  6. Copy numbers, letters, words, short phrases and sentences for personal use or to complete short writing tasks;
  7. Fill out simple forms;
  8. Describe a personal situation by completing a short guided text about self and family;
  9. Understand greetings or other goodwill expressions in speech;
  10. Recognize requests for repetition and clarification;
  11. Follow simple instructions and positive and negative commands and requests;
  12. Understand expressions used to request assistance;
  13. Understand spoken numbers, letters, key words, and short expressions;
  14. Read and understand short greetings and other “goodwill” written texts;
  15. Follow short one-sentence written instructions;
  16. Use simplified, short, common forms; simplified maps and diagrams; common traffic signs and symbols;
  17. Get information from very basic short texts and identify specific details;
  18. Identify grammatical parts of speech;
  19. Use verb tenses;
  20. Recognize and use certain grammatical forms in appropriate word order and context;
  21. Understand basic computer operations;
  22. Demonstrate an understanding of the career planning process;
  23. Identify Student Services, the ESL counselor, and related resources.

Methods utilized to evaluate the degree of accomplishment of course objectives are:
  • Standardized instrument objectively measuring student knowledge
  • Competency based written and practical tests which demonstrate the student's ability to apply skills and concepts learned to minimum standards established by the instructor.
