Scope of Course: Listening, speaking, reading, and writing
skills for non-native speakers of English at the low-beginning level.
|

Specific Course Objectives: Upon successful completion of
the course the student will be able to:
- Indicate problems in communication;
- Give two- to three-word basic everyday
instructions/directions/commands;
- Request assistance, inquire about and state time, and provide basic
personal information related to the context;
- Express ability/inability;
- Write greetings or other goodwill messages;
- Copy numbers, letters, words, short phrases and sentences for
personal use or to complete short writing tasks;
- Fill out simple forms;
- Describe a personal situation by completing a short guided text
about self and family;
- Understand greetings or other goodwill expressions in speech;
- Recognize requests for repetition and clarification;
- Follow simple instructions and positive and negative commands and
requests;
- Understand expressions used to request assistance;
- Understand spoken numbers, letters, key words, and short
expressions;
- Read and understand short greetings and other “goodwill” written
texts;
- Follow short one-sentence written instructions;
- Use simplified, short, common forms; simplified maps and diagrams;
common traffic signs and symbols;
- Get information from very basic short texts and identify specific
details;
- Identify grammatical parts of speech;
- Use verb tenses;
- Recognize and use certain grammatical forms in appropriate word
order and context;
- Understand basic computer operations;
- Demonstrate an understanding of the career planning process;
- Identify Student Services, the ESL counselor, and related resources.

Methods of Determining Whether the Stated Objectives have been met
by Students Methods utilized to evaluate the degree of
accomplishment of course objectives are:
- Standardized instrument objectively measuring student knowledge
- Competency based written and practical tests which demonstrate the
