Word 2003

A powerful word-processing program, Word 2003 not only allows the processing of text but also the incorporation of such elements as tables, spreadsheets, and graphs within a document.

Bedford Handbook

For the student working on a research paper, the Bedford Handbook  provides a section on researched writing, supplying advice on developing, organizing, and formatting the research paper; a variety of documentation styles are covered, including MLA, APA, and ACW (Alliance for Computers and Writing).

 Internet Explorer

Internet Explorer is a program used for surfing the World Wide Web.

ZoomText

Designed to aid visually disabled and learning disabled users, ZoomText magnifies the text as it appears on the computer monitor.  ZoomText can be set to scan the on-screen document, automatically moving the text across the screen in order to allow the user to read a document easily.  The program also permits the user to read a text employing a color-reversal format whereby a document achieves greater clarity through the use of white lettering on a black background.  ZoomText incorporates several additional tools that are useful in the editing of text.

JAWS

Designed for the visually disabled computer user, JAWS is a program that works in conjunction with a speech-synthesizer card to read aloud the text displayed on the screen.  Currently, the Writing Center has only one station equipped with JAWS; this workstation is located in the Computer Classroom. Headphones are available.

Headphones

Headphones are available for students using JAWS and CD-ROM's that incorporate sound.

Large-Format Computer Monitors

The Writing Center provides large-format computer monitors for the use of visually disabled and learning disabled students.  There are two 19" monitors available for use, one located in the Drop-In Lab and the other in the Computer Classroom.

Additional Resources

In addition to the electronic dictionary, thesaurus, and handbook available at each station, hard-copy dictionaries, handbooks, and writing guides are available in both the Computer Classroom and the Drop-In Lab.

Should you need help in locating or using any of these resources, please feel free to ask a technician for assistance.
