Are you ready for a class unlike any other?
Then get ready to explore a brand new world in
English 290: Comic Books As Literature
Class Number 71723
Fall 2009
Mondays & Wednesdays 9:00 - 10:20am
NS-260 (New Natural Sciences Building)
Reading List:

Ivan Brunetti, An Anthology of Graphic Fiction, Cartoons, and True
Stories
Rocco Versaci, This Book Contains Graphic Language: Comics as
Literature
Charles Burns, Black Hole
Jaime Hernandez, The Girl from H.O.P.P.E.R.S.
Alison Bechdel, Fun Home
Alan Moore & Dave Gibbons, Watchmen
All of these books will be available at the Palomar College Bookstore, but
you can also obtain them from a local comic shop--Sky
High Comics, in San Marcos. The owner, Dave Self, should have them on
hand, and he frequently offers deals on multiple purchases. Give him a
call or check out his store!
In this class we will explore what I consider to be a rich, though vastly
underappreciated literary genre: the comic book. We will look at
these works in terms of comics' unique "graphic language"--the interplay of word and
picture--and in terms of what they have to say about our lives and the lives of
others.
These
titles are engaging, insightful, and fun to read. What's more, both of them
will be on reserve in the library, so if you can't get them, there will
be copies available to read.
This will be a class unlike any you've ever had; don't pass it by!
