English 250:

Introduction to Shakespeare

William Shakespeare is renowned and still read today, 400 years after his death, because his work deals with those big questions that we humans still ask ourselves:  questions about life, love, war, revenge, death, our place in the universe, and so on.  In this course, we will explore these and other themes in six of Shakespeare’s plays and in his sonnets.  An important part of the course will be looking at film adaptations of Shakespeare’s plays, such as Baz Luhrman’s Romeo + Juliet, different versions of Hamlet (including one starring Ethan Hawke), and Scotland PA, a crime-comedy adaptation of Macbeth that takes place in a fast-food restaurant called McBeth’s.  Come join us for the fun!
