English 215:

The British Novel

Join us for this stimulating plunge into the world of British fiction, where we will read about weird characters who run around in capes and virtuous characters who nonetheless claim to have known Tarzan personally.  We’ll see folks who make wise choices and those who make dreadful ones, and the consequences of those decisions.  We’ll study the changing form of the novel, from serial publication through stream-of-consciousness to the graphic novel and more.  Most of these novels have also been adapted to film, so we’ll discuss the differences between the two art forms.  In this transferable Humanities class, we’ll take a fresh look at some old classics and also think about what makes new books into classics.
