My Car

Jennifer Gottesman

I don’t own a Mercedes Benz

I drive an old station wagon

That reeks of dog, the beach and stale Cheetos

There’s blue bubblegum stuck to the back seat

A black bobble head dog

Sits on the dashboard

Keeping rhythm

To the music as I drive

The antenna doesn’t go up and down

I don’t get very good radio reception

But, I have a CD player

So I can listen to Coltrane whenever I want

If I ever get a new car

No one will recognize me

Everywhere I go

People see my station wagon

And say, “There’s Jenny”

When my station wagon

Goes to that big used car lot in the sky

I’ll cry
