Earth Sciences Department

Adjunct Evaluation Policy

(adopted April 16, 1998)

(modified August 24, 2001)

Beginning in the fall semester 1998, the Earth Sciences Department will initiate a method for the evaluation of all its adjunct instructors. Steps in the completion of the evaluation process include:

A full-time faculty member (or members) that has/have subject-matter literacy will attend the adjunct instructor’s classroom for the purpose of a classroom evaluation.
Visitation of a class will take place on a mutually agreed upon date and time, and will consist of at least one class period (one to one-and-one-half hours). For a three-hour class, the visitation will consist of a one to one-and-one-half hour length of time.
Completion of the Earth Sciences Department Classroom Visitation and Discussion Form by the full-time instructor in conjunction with the adjunct instructor. When an adjunct instructor signs the form, it indicates awareness of the report; not necessarily concurrence with the evaluation.
All new adjunct instructors will be evaluated during their first and second years of teaching or for teaching a new class. Thereafter, adjunct instructors will be evaluated once every two years.
All adjunct instructors who have been teaching at Palomar College prior to the fall semester 1998 will be evaluated in the same manner as new adjunct instructors.

The purpose of a classroom visitation is to evaluate the adjunct instructor’s teaching ability and techniques. It is also a method to provide feedback and suggestions for the adjunct instructors. As with all evaluation methods, both parties benefit from honest and constructive comments in the evaluation process. Your comments about the evaluation process are encouraged.

Accepted by the Earth Sciences Department on April 16, 1998. Modifications to the evaluation form must be agreed upon and accepted by the Earth Sciences Department.
