Oceanside Museum of Art

704 Pier View Way, Oceanside CA
92054
|
|
About the Company:
|
From modest beginnings as a
volunteer initiative in 1995, OMA has grown into a
dynamic regional institution that contributes to the
vibrant cultural life and economic development of
Oceanside and the region. OMA presents innovative and
exciting individual and group exhibitions of significant
local and regional art, as well as exhibitions of
national and international interest. Additionally, the
museum provides an extensive array of programs including
the popular Art After Dark, Free Family Art Day, 333’s
Jazz at the Museum, Artists@Work, Masterworks of Body
Art and Art of Amore. OMA occupies the venerable 1934
former City of Oceanside City Hall designed by
pioneering San Diego architect Irving Gill and the
Frederick Fisher designed Central Pavilion, which opened
in 2008. Five rotating galleries with more than
8,000 square feet, collections storage, a workshop and
art staging areas, offices, an auditorium, and an
outdoor terrace all combine to form the structure of the
institution. OMA is located next to the Oceanside Civic
Center Plaza, adjacent to City Hall and the Oceanside
Public Library.
Since opening in 1997, the
museum has presented a diverse range of exhibitions.
During its first ten years in the Gill Building OMA held
an average of five exhibitions annually. Since its
expansion, this number has grown to more than fifteen
exhibitions per year. Primary areas served by OMA’s
exhibitions and programing include: San Diego, Orange,
Riverside, Los Angeles and San Bernadino counties, with
the majority of visitors coming from North County San
Diego. The demographics for these areas are mixed;
however there is a large population of Hispanic
constituents residing in each of these counties.
Eighteen percent of OMA visitors come from outside
Southern California including significant percentages
from Northern California, the East Coast and Europe.
OMA’s attendance has grown to an average of 25,000
visitors a year. Its location near the beach and its
proximity to Camp Pendleton help account for its high
number of national and international visitors. At
present OMA has some 1,300 members. OMA supports
students and military by offering free admission to
students, and to active military and their dependents,
as well as reduced admission to seniors. Funded by
The Oceanside Cultural Foundation, the museum provides
free admission every Tuesday in 2012.
