Meet the Artist Arthur Golden Inspired by the blues, folk, country, ragtime and bluegrass roots of his Alabama upbringing, Arthur Golden picked up a guitar for the first time as a teenager while traveling with his father to area music festivals. Encouraged by festival performers, Arthur began to assimilate American Fingerstyle guitar playing. According to Golden, the style has its roots in rural America, particularly the South. Since the 1920’s it has spread from early progenitors like bluesmen Robert Johnson and Son House to more countrified practitioners like Jerry Reed and Merle Travis, the folk-influenced Stephan Grossman and the legendary Chet Atkins, who Golden cites as a major influence. Arthur continues to search out composers from all eras of this distinctly American art form, transcribing and performing work both famous and obscure. At age 18, Arthur developed a passion for classical guitar as well, studying with two of the famed Romero family, Celin and Pepe. He went on to earn a Master’s degree in music/guitar performance from San Diego State University. Arthur has taken his classical work to concert stages throughout the Southwestern United States and Mexico. Arthur currently teaches a variety of guitar styles at Palomar College. He also teaches privately at his residence in Escondido. |
