The Radio and Television Program at Palomar College offers students an opportunity to acquire entry-level skills in radio and television broadcasting, TV News, and communications for business and industry. Courses emphasize Hands-on training. Students can earn an Associate in Arts Degree and a Certificate of Achievement in Radio and Television, Digital Media and Entertainment Technology

Palomar Students/NCN News Win Two Emmy Awards

Palomar's radio and television production classes are taught in two fully equipped 3-camera television production studios, 20 Avid and 23 Final Cut Pro Editing stations classrooms, along with the live on-air campus radio station, KKSM AM 1320 heard thru out North San Diego County.

Students learn TV producing, directing, writing, photojournalism, TV News, lighting, film/video editing and working in front and behind the camera.

Advanced TV production classes are taught in the Educational Television Studio, a 3000-square foot facility offering Beta cam SP mastering capabilities and an Avid Composer editing system with digital effects. Students in remote video shooting , editing, and TV news classes practice on Sony and Cannon digital and Beta SP camera's. Students receive training in analog and digital editing systems including Avid, Final Cut Pro, 

In the field of TV News we offer two courses RTV 240 TV News and RTV 197 Advanced TV News. RTV 240 is a pre req. for RTV 197. In both classes students learn news ethics, writing, producing, editing, and on-camera technique

RTV 240 TV News students produce three live to tape and one live cablecast half-hour newscasts. The focus is news of the Palomar College. The show is titled Primetime Palomar.Note:  RTV 120 is a pre req for this course.

In RTV 197 Advanced TV News students produce eight half-hour TV News programs. The focus is news of north county including more hard news such as police standoffs and crime. The show is titled North County News. Note: RTV 240 is a pre req. for this course.

KKSM, the student-operated campus radio station, broadcast on 1320 AM and cablecast on Cox FM 92.3 24hours a day 365 days a year. The KKSM radio facility uses the latest digital equipment including touch- screen programming and Pro-Tools sound digital editing system. Reporters, writers, editors and anchors deliver daily newscasts prepared from computerized wire service and local sources. Students also learn radio management and programming techniques.

We now offer a unique A.A. and Certificate in Digital Media which includes training on Avid, Final Cut Pro, After Effects, Premier, and Photoshop Most classes satisfy lower division requirements for transfer to a four year institution. Digital media certificate Digital Media AA Degree

TV NEWS- Students can learn TV News by first taking the exciting RTV 240 TV News course which produces the Emmy nominated weekly half-hour newscast broadcast "Primetime Palomar" to 300,000 homes on Cox 16 and Adelphia 67

  Students can then join the real world North County News team.

NCN is North San Diego County's local television news program. You must enroll in RTV 197 Advanced TV News to be a part of the news team.
