PROGRAM ADVANTAGES

Palomar's journalism faculty includes experienced professionals with specialized academic training. The journalism facility includes a multiple-workstation Macintosh computer lab. Students complete their assignments using state-of-the-art software including Pagemaker, Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Aldus Freehand and Microsoft Word. Students earn transferable college credit for their journalism coursework.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

Many internships with local magazines and newspapers are available through Palomar's program. Journalism graduates have gone on to fulltime and part-time positions with the Times Advocate, the Los Angeles Times, the Blade-Citizen, and the San Diego Union-Tribune. Because Palomar offers advanced training in computerized page layout and design, our graduates are highly sought after by industry.

EMPLOYMENT OUTLOOK

Palomar's journalism students are well-positioned to take advantage of the shift to electronic publishing. With the advent of the "electronic newspaper," the outlook for writers and editors with computer experience is great. A number of new jobs are emerging for writers, designers, and photojournalists. Palomar's program also offers training in specialized areas, such as environmental reporting, which gives writers the expertise needed to compete in today's market.

Congratulations!

Journalism students win awards:

Palomar College’s newspaper, The Telescope, was awarded First Place for Best Newspaper in College Media by the San Diego Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ). (pdf)
