 Overview
The Basic Skills Initiative envisions the creation of a Teaching and Learning Center on each of our campuses. 70-80% of our entering students test into pre-College level reading, writing and mathematics courses. The Basic Skills Initiative seeks to support these students through tutoring services, counseling, peer mentoring, increased faculty contact, and supplemental instruction.  The Teaching and Learning Centers will be the embodiment of our mission. Our students can come to the Teaching and Learning Centers for a variety of services, including one-on-one tutoring, small workshops in mathematics, reading, writing and study skills, academic and career counseling and financial aid assistance.   We also envision these Centers as providing professional development opportunities for our teaching staff on the most effective means of realizing our vision of student success in the classroom.
