"It is
disheartening to be charged with a crime, I've
found, when it's one you've committed. There's
rather less opportunity for righteous indignation."

back to a Friday publication day again, and Friday's
are great because the phone doesn't ring nearly as
much. On today's show
we have the software upgrade roundup and other
Palomar tech news, upcoming Academic Technology
training, Dave's Blackboard feature of the week,
brief discussions about the demise of FrontPage and
free downloadable audio books, and finally, the
gizmo of the week.

Tech Talk Topics
1. The demise of FrontPage?
This week I briefly discuss a new web authoring
strategy from Microsoft called the "Expression
Products."
Here is the link to find out more about MS
Expression and the Expression Products
Microsoft nowhere officially says, yet, that
FrontPage will be eliminated, but it is clear that
it will be. Expression Web Designer looks like
a hybrid of FrontPage and Visual Studio, but will
continue the FrontPage tradition. We will have
to wait to see how our campus licenses this product.
2. Audible Books
Did you know that audible books are available as
free downloads from the San Diego County library?
They have hundreds of titles for download, mostly
current books and best sellers, and all you need is
a library card, and a computer equipped with the
Windows media player. If you want to listen to
it on the go, you also need a portable media device
which is wma compliant, like the Creative Zen, or
one of scores of others. The iPod is out,
because it does not support wma format with digital
rights management. Here is what you get if you
try to convert a wma file with drm in iTunes:

That means, that if you want to go mobile with
your audio books (and who doesn't) you will have to
use a wma compliant mp3 player. (Yes, I know
this file has nothing to do with mp3, but that's
just what they have come to be called).

Gizmo of the week
The world's first mobile wi-fi, Internet phone is
soon to be offered by Skype and Netgear together.
Skype is a program that can be downloaded and
installed that makes it possible to make free phone
calls over the Internet to anyone else on Skype.
The company has teamed with Netgear to make a phone
that makes this possible for mobile calling as well.
Now, if you are near an Internet access point, and
have one of these phones, you can call anyone else
with the same service for free. Find out more
at the
Skype and especially at the
Netgear web sites. The Netgear link goes
directly to information about the wi-fi phone
itself.

group efforts to keep the unexpected from
happening." --Barbara Tober
