Spring 2013 Blackboard Courses Have Been Created

Blackboard LogoThe new Blackboard course shells for the spring 2013 semester have been created, as of Sunday, October 21.  Standard procedure is to create course shells for the coming semester 90 days prior to its start.  The new courses will be listed in your My Courses area.  Materials can be copied into the new course shells using the Course Copy tool.  Remember to archive your courses periodically, and especially at the conclusion of a semester, in case they need to be restored at a later time.  Remember also that your new, spring 2013 courses will not be available to students until you make them available.  Please contact us for assistance if you encounter problems.

Blackboard will be updated to the latest Service Pack over the winter break, from January 7-10, 2013, and will be unavailable during that time.

iPad Users Groupjack-o-lantern

This Wednesday, October 31, we will be holding our once-per-semester iPad users group in room LL-109 from 3:00 - 4:30 p.m.  The event is on a drop-in basis, so if you use an iPad, or are interested in using an iPad, please plan to attend.  Refreshments will be served, and we will have demos and discussion on using the iPad with classroom projectors, using Dropbox, PDF annotation on the iPad, and using the iPad with Blackboard.  If you have an app you want to share, we will have open sharing time also.  (Costumes, of course, are optional).

Windows 8 and Our Academic Alliance Program

Windows 8 start screenWindows 8 was formally released on October 26.  We recommend the ars technica review, if you want to get up to speed on Microsoft's latest OS, which is designed to integrate the desktop and touch-based tablet worlds, for better or worse.   We do not have plans to convert the Academic Technology labs to Windows 8 for the spring 2013 semester.  But for the millions of PCs and laptops that will be sold this Christmas, Windows 8 will be the OEM installed OS.  If you wish to obtain a free copy, as long as you comply with Microsoft's terms of use, Palomar faculty, staff and students can do so through our Academic Alliance program.  If you do decide to upgrade older OS computers to Windows 8, the CNet Windows 8 upgrade FAQ may be useful to you.
