NBC Learn
NBC Learn Logo

NBC Learn puts a whole spectrum of content from the archives at NBC at your fingertips for use within your Blackboard courses. The methods of applying this material are fairly straightforward, and Blackboard provides a “how-to” video demonstration on using the NBC Learn content in a course site.  Our implementation of NBC Learn is on a trial-basis, and will remain in effect until October 31, 2011.  Content that is embedded within Blackboard or downloaded or embedded in PowerPoint presentations will cease to work after that date unless we purchase the product.  The idea of the trial is to find out if these materials are truly useful to us.  Please send us your feedback

If you haven't yet, please take a look at the NBC Learn materials and let us know what you think by participating in the product survey we will be conducting in the second week in October.  We will notify you by email when the survey is ready.  We are particularly interested in whether you think the level of the material is appropriate for community college instruction, and whether you personally would use the materials or recommend to your students to use them.

Blackboard Training DVDs Available Through PC Library

If you do not have time to attend our in-person training, or come in to meet with the Blackboard techs, you can still get excellent Blackboard training by checking out a lynda.com training DVD "Blackboard 9.x Essential Training for Instructors" from the library.

Academic Technology has placed 2 copies of the DVD for faculty/staff only checkout behind the circulation desk on the 2nd floor of the San Marcos campus library.  "In this course, Dr. Patrick Crispen teaches the ins and outs of Blackboard 9 so that educators and trainers can get up-to-speed in the system quickly—even if they've never used Blackboard before."  The DVD course is worth 6.5 hours of PD credit, which can be claimed through the PD Office.

Mac OS X and PDF Documents on Blackboard

PDF documents uploaded and linked as a File type link cannot be viewed by Mac OS X 10.6+ users in Firefox and Safari browsers. An error message indicating there is not a current plugin will result when the student attempts to view the document. The Chrome browser does not have this issue. PDF documents attached to items do not have this issue. The problem can be solved for Firefox and Safari browsers by installing the third-party plugin Schubert|it.  The problems seems to be one more milestone in the escalating feud between Apple and Adobe.
