Spring 2010
Workshops
Academic Technology will
offer four types of training
opportunities to Palomar College faculty
members in Fall 2009:
-
In-person instructor facilitated
workshops
-
Summer Tech Camp
-
Online, self-paced workshops
-
To-be-arranged individual
training
-
To-be-arranged departmental
training
[Academic
Departments Only]
Resources for the
in-person and online training can be
found in a Blackboard course titled
“Academic Technology Training,” in which
all faculty and staff members are
pre-enrolled. You will find it in the
“My Courses” area when you login to
Blackboard. Each faculty and staff
member at Palomar College has a
pre-created Blackboard login account
which uses their Palomar userid as
username (i.e., the part of the email
address to the left of the @ sign is the
Blackboard username), and their Palomar
email password as the password.
The tabular schedule of In-person
and online instructor facilitated
workshops is given below, and can be
found on the web at
http://www.palomar.edu/atrc/attrainingschedule.htm.
Our 3rd annual Summer
Tech Camp will not occur until August,
but is being announced along with the
spring training so that those interested
can sign up early. Space is
limited and the subject is especially
important this year.
The online self-paced
training uses workshops developed in
Blackboard. Login and complete the
assigned reading and other course work
at any time throughout the Fall
semester.
To-be-arranged
departmental training should be arranged
through department chairs. We have
provided a menu of possible training
topics below, from which departments may
select training topics. Groups of
individuals should consult with your
chair to schedule the training at your
location and at the best time for your
department. This training is
intended for academic and not
administrative departments.
To-be-arranged individual
training should be arranged with the
contact person given in the description
of that type of training below.

find files once you have filed
them (!); how to change your
screen resolution, and just what
is screen resolution, anyway;
what's the difference between a
favorite and a shortcut, and how
to make them; how do you change
the behavior of your mouse; and
so on... We will be using
Windows 7 for this workshop, but
concepts presented are, in most
cases, so basic that they should
be relevant across any OS. |

version 8, called "Blackboard
Classic." Beginning fall 2010 Palomar
College will use Blackboard 9,
called "Blackboard Learn."
Blackboard Learn is
the next generation Learning
Management Software licensed by
the District. This four
part series is intended to teach
how to use the new version of
Blackboard.
The series of
workshops may be taken
independently of each other,
although it is highly
recommended that you take the
“Getting Ready for Day One”
workshop before any others.
Completion of all four sessions
will entitle attendees to a
certificate of proficiency in
using version 9 of Blackboard.
Morning beverages, rolls and
fruit, and lunch will be
provided for each of the 4
workshops. A valuable
prize will be given away at the
conclusion of each workshop.
Getting
Ready for Day One:
Whether needing to get a
course site ready at the last
minute, or planning ahead for
the next semester, there are
several things that should be in
a Blackboard course before it is
ready for Day One with the
students. In this workshop we
will discuss and create samples
of these core elements of a
Blackboard course.
This workshop
is suitable for faculty of both
online classes and on-campus
classes using Blackboard to
augment traditional class work.
However, this workshop does not
assume any prior experience with
using Blackboard. It is highly
recommended that you complete
this workshop before any of the
other Teaching with “Blackboard
Learn” Series. |

different best practices for
distributing handouts and
PowerPoints, and create some
samples for uploading into
Blackboard. We will also discuss
the process of adding audio and
video content to a Blackboard
course, and do a hands-on
exercise in organizing materials
in a Blackboard course into one
of several pre-made course
templates.
This workshop
is suitable for faculty of both
online classes and on-campus
classes using Blackboard to

explore several of the core
communication tools built into
Blackboard, then consider the
virtues of adding other
communication avenues to your
course site.
This workshop

B. Summer
Tech Camp

|
Facilitated by: |
AT Staff |
|
Date: |
August 3-6 |
|
Time: |
9:00a.m. -
3:00p.m. each day |
|
Location: |
LL-109 |
|
Description: |
Joint the
Academic Technology staff for
the third annual Summer Tech
Camp. The event is
especially important this year
because it will focus on
teaching with the new version of
Blackboard, version 9, which
will "go live" in the fall 2010
semester. The changes
between the current version 8
and the new version 9 are not
trivial. Summer tech camp
will go beyond the "New to Nine"
and other related training being
offered in the spring. The
emphasis will be on those who
already use Blackboard in their
teaching, but need to make their
courses "9 ready." Of
course, beginners are welcome,
but we will stress the full
range to Blackboard 9 tools.
We ask for a commitment to
attend all four days of the
camp. Here is what will be
happening:
Day 1:
Blackboard Foundations - The
base principles of the new
Blackboard version 9, and
migration of your existing
Blackboard 8 (called
"Blackboard Classic")
content (if any) to the new
version.
Day 2:
Course Building - Most
effective structuring of
your Blackboard courses, and
addition of course contents
of all kinds, documents,
audios, videos, PowerPoint
presentations, flash
objects, etc.
Day 3:
Using the Blackboard
Communication Tools - How to
most effectively use email,
chat, discussion boards,
voice tools, econferencing,
course blogs, wikis or
podcasts, and the other
communication tools built in
to Blackboard to effectively
communicate with your
students.
Day 4:
Assessing Student Learning
in Blackboard - The most
effective use of the new
Blackboard assessment
tools--question types,
question pools,
randomization, test timing,
test deployment, the
anti-plagiarism service, and
use of the Blackboard grade
center.
As always, the
event will be catered, with
morning coffee, fruit and rolls,
and a full lunch provided for
attendees. Again, as
always, there will be valuable
giveaways at the end of each day
and a grand prize at the end of
the event. |

in the "My Courses" box, scroll if
necessary until you see the "Courses in
which you are enrolled" section, and
click on "Academic Technology Training."
3. Click
