 Anti-virus/Anti-spyware Software.  McAfee anti-virus software is available free to Cox customers, and all PCs at Palomar College are protected by Symantec Anti-Virus, but those who need free alternatives for their home computers might be interested in Microsoft Security Essentials, AVG Free Anti-Virus, or F-PROT Antivirus, which has a free 30-day trial.  Free, online anti-virus scans are available from Trend Micro, and Microsoft.   Anti-spyware software includes Windows Defender, are Spyware Doctor, SpyBot Search & Destroy and Ad-Aware Personal.  For more information visit the Microsoft Malware Protection Center. 

Any Audio Converter.  Any Audio Converter is a versatile audio converter and audio extractor with user-friendly interface and powerful functions. As an audio converter, Any Audio Converter can convert audio between MP3, WMA, WAVE, AAC, M4A and OGG formats as well as convert other unprotected audio formats. As an audio extractor, Any Audio Converter can extract audio from all popular video formats and online videos from YouTube, Google Video and Nico Video.

Any Video Converter  Any Video Converter Freeware is a free video converter for converting video files between various formats, with fast converting speed and excellent video quality. This powerful free video converter application makes video conversion quick and easy.

  Audacity.  A great freeware audio recording program.  Audacity will allow recording in  mono or stereo, at various sample rates, even multi-track recording, and exports in WAV, MP3 and OGG formats.

  Bullzip PDF Printer.  A FREE PDF Printer that allows you to print to a PDF document from any Microsoft Windows application. Supports Microsoft Terminal Server and Citrix Metaframe environments.  This product can do a remarkable job reducing the size of bloated PDF documents.

   GIMP.  GIMP is an acronym for GNU Image Manipulation Program. It is a freely distributed program for such tasks as photo retouching, image composition and image authoring.  It has many capabilities. It can be used as a simple paint program, an expert quality photo retouching program, an online batch processing system, a mass production image renderer, an image format converter, etc.  GIMP is expandable and extensible. It is designed to be augmented with plug-ins and extensions to do just about anything. The advanced scripting interface allows everything from the simplest task to the most complex image manipulation procedures to be easily scripted.  Free. 

  Image Tuner.  Image Tuner is a free software for batch resizing, converting, watermarking and renaming your digital photos and images from more than 20 image formats to JPEG, BMP, PNG, TIFF and GIF formats. The program will help you to prepare your digital photos to upload and publish them in the Internet or send via e-mail.  Click here for a brief (4:32) screencast on how to use this tool.

  Jing is a great, free program which contains features of Techsmith industry standard screen capture and screen video programs (SnagIt and Camtasia).  It is the quick and easy way to capture part of a screen or make a narrated flash movie on a how-to computer topic.  Output can be stored locally, in your faculty.palomar.edu folder, at screencast.com (they give a free 2GB of storage there) and also uploaded to Flickr or other locations.  Screen captures can be annotated.  Screen videos are limited to 5 minutes.  For Mac or PC.  Free, with a $14.95 annual Pro option.

 NotePad++. Notepad++ is a free source code editor and Notepad replacement that supports several languages. Running in the MS Windows environment, its use is governed by GPL Licence.

  LibreOffice.  Free, open source version forked from OpenOffice.  LibreOffice is the free power-packed Open Source personal productivity suite for Windows, Macintosh and Linux, that gives you six feature-rich applications for all your document production and data processing needs: Writer, Calc, Impress, Draw, Math and Base.

  Real Player.  The Real media player is an alternative to other media players.  We do not recommend the use of the Real media player and do not support it, but some links to media provided by faculty members can only be played using it, so we have provided a download link here.  Be careful to download the free version, and not the for-pay trial version.

  WinAmp.  Alternate free media player.  listen, watch and manage music, video, podcasts and internet radio on your desktop and devices. Winamp is for people who like to customize, tinker and tweak: offering the widest range of extensions, skins, and services to add to your experience.

7-Zip File Archiver.  Open source file archive program that produces highly compressed zip files similar to Winzip.  7-Zip is open source software. Most of the source code is under the GNU LGPL license.  Free.
