Blackboard World '06
Korstad |
Haydn, Shay, David and Chris are back from
Blackboard World '06. I have David and Haydn
on today's show and will thoroughly debrief them
about what went on at the annual Blackboard users'
conference and find out whether those were soft
drinks they were consuming during the party on
Wednesday night. Other features of today's
show will be the usual
Palomar tech news/reminders, upcoming Academic Technology
training, Dave's Blackboard feature of the week,
a brief discussions about MS reader, and finally, the
gizmo of the week.
Campus Tech News
-
This is not exactly tech news, but we would like
to remind everyone that Palomar is celebrating
the legacy of Cesar Chavez with three events:
- A photo exhibit at the
Boehm gallery titled "Cesar Chavez: His Soul
and His Spirit" running from March 15th through
April 15th.
- An artist's reception for the same event, to
be held in the gallery March 18 from 4:30-6pm to
honor the photographer, Mr. Victor Aleman.
- A general celebration on March 31, from
12-3pm at the college clock tower where there
will be music and food. All the events are
free to the public.
-
Tami Weintraub of the library would like to
remind professors not to broadcast the password
for access to the library's journal databases,
but rather to have students contact the library
to get the password. The web form to
contact the library is at:

Tech Talk Topics
The Microsoft reader. If you are into
reading books, you can gain first-hand experience
with what is good and bad about the eReader programs
available today. The two leading candidates
are MS Reader and the Adobe Acrobat reader.
Screen clarity, using MS Clear Type, is outstanding.
Text to speech, however, and especially using the
default voices from Microsoft, leaves much to be
desired. Next week I will do a more thorough
comparison of the voices in Reader, Natural Voice,
and Dragon Naturally Speaking. For this week,
I just want to promote the downloading of eBooks
among those who have never tried it.

Gizmo of the week
The
iPod tie.
Thomas Pink, a London retailer of fine men and
women's clothing, wants to find out. They've
released a limited edition Commuter Tie
that features a pocket on the reverse to hold an
iPod Nano or other MP3 player and an extra fabric
loop to keep headphone wires out of sight and close
to the body.
The tie is 100% silk and retails for $95.

The
