Monterey |
I'm back from Monterey and had a terrific time.
We've wrapped up week 5 of the semester and
everything is running smoothly. The labs are
full and the students working away. Presidents
day weekend is here, so the podcast is being
published on a Thursday again. On today's show
we have a lot of tech news for Palomar, have a brief
interview with Chris Norcross about his upcoming
FrontPage classes, interview David about the
Blackboard feature of the week, talk about Beta
software, and wrap it up with a gizmo vending
machine.

Tech Talk Topic
Should I install Beta software on my work
computer?
This week I discuss three products from
Microsoft, the Beta 2 preview of IE 7, the Beta 2
release of MS Anti-Spyware, now called MS Defender,
and the anti-virus product from Microsoft called "OneCare
Live."
Here are the links to download these products:
There is Beta software and Beta software...
In the case of IE7, we do not advise that this be
installed on District computers, and only on home
computers if you can afford to lose the
functionality of the machine. The MS forums
list a large number of known issues with the preview
of Beta 2. With MS Defender, we recommend it.
It is a long tried and true product, not really
Beta, though it is called that, as far as we can
tell, to maintain believable deniability. With
OneCare, it's your call whether to try it at home.
We do not recommend it, though suspect that it will
eventually be covered in our campus agreement, in
which case we will in all likelihood begin using it
on campus.

Gizmo of the week
At MooBella.com you can see what world-class
ice-cream lovers, who are also self-described
world-class engineers, can do when they decide to
create a homemade ice cream on demand vending
machine. It's fascinating...

There's interesting streamed media to describe what
