Palomar drops another tough one 3-2 to Coast

COSTA MESA / SAN MARCOS (4-05-2013 / 4-10-2013) -- Palomar won the first set against Orange Coast on Friday night but wound up dropping a 3-1 Pacific Coast Athletic Conference men's volleyball decision to the Pirates.

The set scores in the back-and-forth game were 22-25, 25-22, 25-22, 25-21.

Nick Supple (left) led the Comets with 10 kills. Kyle Bass contriuted nine kills.

Orange Coast moved to 10-5 on the season, 6-3 in conference.

Paloma finished the season 3-15, 2-10 on Wednesday with a forfeit victory over San Diego City College, which after multiple suspensions did not have enough players left to play its final five games.

Young Comets manage win in one set vs. champs

HUNTINGTON BEACH (4-03-2013) -- Golden West, which is seeking its sixth state team men's volleyball championship and first since 1999, held off visiting Palomar 3-1 on Wednesday evening to advance to 12-2 on the season and 8-0 in the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference.

The Rustlers, who already have clinched the PCAC title, won 25-22, 22-25, 25-14, 25-19.

The young Comets (2-14, 1-9) gave Golden West everything it could handle in the second set, coming back from a 5-0 deficit to win it. Hunter Chaney (right) led Palomar with 14 kills and four blocks. Nick  Supple contributed eight kills.

PC sweeps City, then extends Griffins to five

SAN DIEGO (3-15-2013) / SAN MARCOS (3-22-2013) -- Coach Bjorn Dahl's young Palomar team, coming together as the season winds down, swept San Diego City College 25-11, 25-15, 26-24 in a Pacific Coast Athletic Conference game on Friday, March 15, at the Knights' Harry West Gymnasium.

Then, the Comets nearly upset traditional state power Grossmont on Friday evening at the Dome, finally losing in five sets 26-24, 25-21, 21-25, 14-25, 15-13.

Hunter Chaney (left) led the Comets against the Griffins with 13 kills and also had two blocks. Nick Supple (right) contributed 11 kills and 10 blocks. He also had .5 blocks.

Trailing two sets to none, the Comets battled back to win the third set, then jumped out to a 7-0 lead behind Cameron Little's serving in the fourth set and continued on to the win. Kyle Bass' kill put Palomar over the top.

The Comets also led late in the fifth game but were unable to hold on.

Comets take first set 27-25 but Pirates win in four

SAN MARCOS (3-12-2013) -- Palomar won the first set, which ended in mass confusion, but Orange Coast came back to hold off the Comets' upset bid 3-1 in a Pacific Coast Athletic Conference game on Wednesday night at The Dome.

The Comets, who have only three sophomores on their roster (Hunter Chaney, Mark Lorack and Ariel Milo), appeared to have lost the first set on a stuff block at the net. Both teams had cleared the bench area and were in the process of switching sides when the referee ruled the Orange Coast player had touched the net.

That brought the opposing teams back on the court and, when Palomar eventually won the set 27-25, and then took the lead in the second game, it appeared the Comets possibly could be on the way to their first conference victory of the season.

But the Pirates battled back to win three straight sets, taking home a 25-27, 26-24, 25-20, 25-16 win to advance to 7-3 on the season and 3-1 in conference. Palomar fell to 1-11 and 0-6 in conference.

Chaney (15 kills), Nick Supple (13 kills) and Bryce Willson (4 blocks) led the Comets statistically.

The Olympians outlasted the Comets 25-14, 27-25, 22-25, 21-25, 15-6.

Kyle Bass led Palomar (1-9,  0-4 in the PCAC) with 16 kills and also had 17 digs. Nick Supple contributed 14 kills. Ariel Milo added 14 digs.
