Comets No. 19 in Nation

Palomar College, which kicks off its football season at 7 p.m. Saturday at Cerritos, is ranked No. 19 in the Nation by the JC Grid-Wire entering the season.

Cerritos, the Comets' opponent Saturday, is ranked 13th. City College of San Francisco, the team Palomar beat for the State title in both the Comets' 1993 and 1998 National Championship seasons, is ranked No. 1.

The Grid-Wire selected Palomar linebacker James Goins on its JC All-American preseason first team. Palomar running back Keiki Misipeka is listed as a "Player to Watch."

The Comets, winners of three National titles since 1991, are ranked No. 8 in California in the JC Athletic Bureau's California Community College Football Coaches Association poll. They're ranked No. 4 in Southern California in the same poll..
