106 Comets begin football drills

Palomar College, a winner of three National Community College football championships in the past nine seasons, began football drills for the 2000 season Tuesday morning.

Coach Tom Craft greeted 106 players.

The Comets will begin drills in pads Friday, will scrimmage at San Diego Mesa at 1 p.m. Sept. 1, and will kick off the 2000 season at Cerritos at 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 9.

Palomar won the Mission Conference championship last season, going 8-3, and was ranked No. 21 in the Nation by the JC Grid-Wire.

The Comets tied Northeastern Oklahoma A&M for the 1991 National championship, won the 1993 National title outright and tied Butler County Community College of El Dorado, Kan., for the 1998 National championship.

Palomar has played in 10 bowl games since 1989, winning nine of them.
