Three new assistants join football staff

Coach Tom Craft, refusing to let the Palomar football staff rest on its laurals after winning State Staff of the Year honors a year ago, has upgraded his staff with the addition of Kenny Stills, Steve Silberman and Randy Simmrin.

Stills, a former NFL safety who played five seasons for the Green Bay Packers and two seasons with the Minnesota Vikings, will coach the Comets' secondary. Stills played for coach Herb Meyer at El Camino High School (Oceanside, CA) and played collegiately at El Camino JC and for three seasons at Wisconsin, where he was an All-Big Ten selection at cornerback. He previously coached collegiately as an assistant at Menlo (CA) College and last year at the University of San Diego. He was a general manager and play-by-play announcer for three years in the Arena League, and spent two years as a TV sports anchor in Green Bay. He's also a former assistant for Meyer at El Camino High, where he coached the linebackers.

Silberman, who coached Vista High School (Vista, CA) to a 46-15-2 record and three consecutive CIF-San Diego Section Division I championships, is Palomar's new quarterbacks coach. Silberman replaced the legendary Dick Haines at Vista in 1995 and guided the Panthers to CIF titles in 1996, 1997 and 1998. He coached Vista to four Palomar League championships in his five seasons there – in 1996, 1997, 1998 and 1999. Silberman, who played at Cal State Northridge as an outside linebacker, compiled a 99-60-2 record as head coach at five Southern California high schools. Before taking the Vista job, he was head coach at Centennial High of Corona, Gahr High of Cerritos, Sonora High of La Habra and La Canada High School. He also served a tour at McAllister College in Minnesota as offensive coordinator.

Simmrin, who joins the staff as receivers coach, was an All-American selection for USC's 1978 National Championship team and helped the Trojans to Rose Bowl victories in 1977 (14-6 over Michigan) and 1979 (17-10, also over Michigan). He was a two-time All-Pac 10 first-team selection. Simmrin played on John McKay's final two teams and John Robinson's first two teams at USC. He played for the Edmonton Eskimos in the Canadian Football League and spent three pre-seasons with the Buffalo Bills, Miami Dolphins and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He was offensive coordinator at Burbank (CA) High School.
