Comets get bye, await Fullerton

Palomar College drew a bye in football last week and will open Mission Conference Central Division play on Saturday afternoon, against Fullerton at Wilson Stadium in Escondido.

The Comets lost an eight-point lead and dropped a 37-14 decision to Nationally No. 8-ranked Mt. San Antonio two weeks ago at Wilson Stadium. Palomar, on top 14-6 in the final minute of the first half, appeared to be going in for another touchdown after Alec Wisecup intercepted a Mt. SAC pass and returned the ball to the Mounties' 17-yard line. But, after two quick interceptions, the Mounties scored two touchdowns in 33 seconds and the Comets never were able to recover.

Freshman Se'e Poumele had nine receptions for 89 yards for Palomar. Freshman Deondre Alexander had six catches for 116 yards. Alexander scored a touchdown on a 77-yard pass play from freshman quarterback Andy Goodenough (18-for-26 passing for 218 yards).

Palomar, which was ranked No. 12 in the Nation by the J.C. Grid-Wire entering the game, dropped out of the rankings with the loss as the freshman-dominated Comets fell to 3-2.

Palomar and Mt. SAC have won four National Community College championships between them in the past nine seasons. The Comets won National titles in 1991, 1993 and 1998. The Mounties won a National championship in 1997.

KKSM-1320 AM will broadcast Saturday's game with the Hornets (1-4) live. Kickoff will be at 1 p.m.
