No. 4 Comets hold off Hornets for non-conference win at Dome

SAN MARCOS (11-21-08) -- Palomar, ranked No. 4 in the state by the California Community College Women's Basketball Coaches Association, held off a second-half rally by Fullerton at the Dome on Friday evening to down the 14th-ranked Hornets 66-59 in a non-conference game.

Palomar (6-1), leading 38-24 at halftime, saw Fullerton (5-3) close the gap to three points in the second half before the Comets drew back away late in the game. Melanie Wilkerson, Kiara Stinson and Lauren Matheney each made two key free throws down the stretch.

Nicole Wilhite led Palomar with 15 points, 13 in the first half. Wilkerson (above left) had 12 points and seven rebounds. Lauren Matheney contributed eight rebounds,  Nicole Pedrotti seven boards.

"We only had 16 turnovers, which was a big key for us, especially in such an up-tempo game." coach Sheri Jennum said. "That, and play on the boards."

Palomar, ranked fourth in the state behind Mt. SAC, Ventura and City College of San Francisco, had 40 rebounds, 21 in the first half.
