prior to being converted into a closer prior to
the 2001 season.... Sweeney hit four home runs
while appearing in 20 games and starting seven.

as the relief pitcher on the All-Pacific Coast
Conference first team selected by conference
coaches. ... Was one of the most
effective closers ever at Palomar, appearing in
18 games and recording six saves. ... That total
ties him for second on the all-time Palomar list
with Chris Adams, who went on to pitch for the
University of New Mexico. ... Only Jerry
Stafford, who went on to pitch for San Diego
State and in pro ball, had more saves in a
season, nine. ... Sweeney struck out 23 and
walked seven, two of those walks intentionally,
in 19 innings. He compiled an ERA of 2.37 on the
season and a conference ERA of 2.31. ... His
saves came against Canada on Feb. 3, Irvine
Valley on Feb. 16, San Diego City College on
March 13, San Diego Mesa on March 22, Mt. SAC on
April 10 and San Diego City College on April 17.
... He's considered a strong Division I prospect.
