What is a mobile lab and how can I use it?

Cisco 1200
Access Points

A mobile lab is a set of Dell Inspiron 8600 laptop computers, equipped with wireless network cards, that are stored in rolling security carts.  Each cart contains 15 computers and a Cisco wireless access point.  The access point is connected to the network port in your classroom and gives your students access to Palomar network assets, including the Internet.  There is no login for you or your students to worry about.  Just turn them on and use them.

You can reserve the lab--as many as 30 computers at a time--by filling out the Faculty Reservation Form at this web site.  While in use in the classroom, the laptops will run off their batteries.  Your students will have access to Internet.  The hard drives of the laptops contain a universal image of programs and tutorials available to Palomar students, including the Office 2003 productivity suite, many adobe, macromedia, and other specialized programs.

Academic Technology is responsible for the mobile wireless labs, and requires at least one week's advance notice for a mobile lab reservation.  This gives us time to contact the IS department so that they can configure the network port(s) in your classroom to be wireless computer ready.

Academic Technology staff will roll the cart(s) to your classroom approximately 10 minutes before the class begins, hook up the access point, and test it for network connectivity.  It will be your responsibility, as class instructor, to distribute the laptop computers to your students and return them to the cart(s) after class.  When the class is over, the Academic Technology staff will return to pick up the cart(s).

If you have questions about the laptops, battery life, recharging procedure, access to resources, or any other questions, read the FAQ at this site.

Policies Procedures
Mobile wireless labs may be reserved by valid Palomar College faculty for classes held on the San Marcos campus only.

All reservation requests are processed on a first come, first serve basis.  In the event of conflicting reservation requests, faculty who teach credit courses during the semester will be given first priority.

The reservation must be made no less than one week in advance with the Academic Technology Resource Center (ATRC).

Mobile labs will be checked out for the duration of a class.  If an instructor wishes to use a lab for two consecutive classes, two reservations must be made, one for each class number.

Mobile labs can be checked out for as long as 4 hours at a time—the maximum battery life with second battery installed. Depending on usage, battery life may be less than 4 hours.

Faculty members using the mobile lab must take full responsibility for the security of the laptop computers and any peripherals that circulate with the lab.  The lab must be kept locked and secured when not in use Instructors are responsible for enforcing the college’s computing policies and regulations:

Telecommunication Guidelines

Student Code of Conduct

Upon delivery the ATRC technician will not leave the cart unattended.  He will wait until the arrival of the instructor, or, if the instructor does not arrive within 15 minutes of the class start time, he will return the mobile lab carts.

If an instructor reserves the mobile lab but fails to appear for a class without notifying Academic Technology Resource Center (ext. 2657), the instructor will lose the privilege of reserving the mobile labs for the duration of that semester.

Laptop computers must never be left unattended.  It is the instructor’s responsibility to report any problem with the laptops that occurs during the class.

Once delivered, it is the instructor’s responsibility to distribute the laptops from the cart to students, and to return the laptops to the cart at the end of the class.

If a class ends early it is the instructor’s responsibility to contact ATRC.  The instructor must never leave the mobile laptops unattended.

If any laptop or related peripheral is damaged or found to be faulty during use, it must be reported on the problem form that accompanies the cart to the classroom.

Student personal data must be saved to removable media, or preferably, emailed to self, when using the mobile labs.  On shutdown all personal data on a mobile lab laptop computer will be cleared.

The Mobile Lab should be kept in a secure place under lock at all times when not in use.

Instructors reserve a mobile lab by submitting the web form (at http://www.palomar.edu/at/mobilelabs/reservationform.htm)  no less than one week in advance. An email notification confirming the reservation will be sent within one business day of instructor’s request.  Please check the online calendar first to be sure the lab is not already reserved for the time you want it.

Mobile wireless labs travel in carts of 15 computers.  Specify on the reserve form how many carts you need (two carts will be available Spring semester 2005, two additional carts will be added beginning summer 2005).  Also specify if you need the writeable CD drives installed.  If the writeable CD drives are installed, maximum battery life can be expected to be no more than 2 1/2 hours.

Be sure to specify start and end times for classes and also the room number.  If a class ends early it is the instructor’s responsibility to contact ATRC phone ext. 2657).  The instructor must never leave the mobile laptops unattended.

For regular daytime classes (M-Th 7:30AM to 4PM, Fri 7:30AM-4PM) the ATRC will deliver the mobile lab carts to the instructor’s classroom.

Because of shortage of staff, for night or Saturday classes (M-Th 5pm-9pm or Sat. 9am-1pm) instructors must be willing to help deliver and return the mobile labs if their class requires more than one cart.

Upon delivery to the classroom the ATRC technician will test the wireless access point and confirm that network access is working.  If there is a problem, the ATRC technician will contact the IS helpdesk.  IS must then work to resolve connectivity or port configuration problems.

ATRC employees who deliver a mobile lab to an instructor will sign off on delivery of the lab and confirm network connectivity.  The instructor will sign for receipt of the lab and assumption of responsibility for the computers while under their supervision.

It is the instructor's responsibility to distribute the laptops to the students, and to return them to the cart(s) after the class is over.

The ATRC technician picking up the lab after use will sign for receipt of them.  Laptop computers must never be left unattended.  It is the instructor’s responsibility to report any problem with the laptops that occurs during the class.

Each mobile lab will circulate along with a trouble report form.  If an instructor has any problems with the mobile lab during the course of her class, she should fill in the form at the conclusion of the class so that ATRC technicians can diagnose and fix the problem.

All laptops and related peripherals must be accounted for by both the instructor and the ATRC technician before the carts are locked up and returned to ATRC storage.
