Q.
How do I create the
redirector file, which I can use to link to my Real media file once it
is mounted on the server?
A. Use a pure
text editing program, like Microsoft Notepad to create the file.
To start Notepad, choose Start > Programs > Accessories > Notepad.
Type the following in the Notepad editing window:

As explained
previously, rtsp:// calls the real time streaming protocol on the real
server. You cannot enter an rtsp link directly in your web page.
Rather, it must be contained within a redirector file. In the
example above, real.palomar.edu is the actual server name, but /path/
and filename.rm are place holders for your actual information. If
your Real server folder name is jdoe (assigned to you when Academic
Technology creates your Real server account) and the file you have
transferred to the real server is named "anaconda.rm," then the link
would look like this:
rtsp://real.palomar.edu/jdoe/anaconda.rm
Now, save the file by
choosing File > Save as... from within Notepad. Save the file in a
place on your hard drive where you can easily find it again. Give
it a name like: myfile.ram. Naming your redirector file the same
as your media file makes a lot of sense. If you create a lot of
media files, it helps keep things straight--though the name can be
anything you want. If your media file is called "anaconda.rm" it
is a good idea to name your ram file "anaconda.ram." Note:
your must use the .ram file extension for the file to work.
We strongly recommend
you do not include spaces in file names. Use the underscore
character if you wish the appearance of separated words.
Once you have saved
the file, close Notepad.
Q. How do I get the RAM file into
my Palomar web?
A. You could use the WS_FTP
program, described in the previous lesson. In fact, if your web is
a simple, non-FrontPage web, this is the recommended method. Most
Palomar College webs, however, are FrontPage webs, meaning that they can
take advantage of all the powerful features of that web editing program.
If your web is one of these, use the following procedure:
Start FrontPage and choose File > Open Web (it is
very important to select "Open Web," and not simply "Open." You
will see the following dialog box:

Be sure the "My Network Places" area is
selected in the "Look In" field, and that you use the full name to
access the web, including the http:// part.
You will be challenged for a username and
password. These refer to your actual Palomar College logins--the
same you use to login to any computer resources on campus.

if the password box
you get looks like the one above, fill it in accordingly. However,
if the password box only has two fields, one for Username and one for
password, it will probably be necessary to
prefix your username with the domain name in which your account exits,
like this:
Username: PCCD_STF_DOM01\Username
where "Username" is your actual username.
Mine is tgray, for example. Be sure to use a backslash: \ in
the username box, and not a forward slash: /.
Once logged in, turn on the Folder List panel by
selecting View > Folder List, if it is not already on.
Click File > Import, and you will see the
following:

Click the Add File... button, then navigate to
your ram file, select it:

Click Open, and the file will be added to your
Import List. Then click OK, and the file will be imported into
your web.
Once this is accomplished, open the web page (or
create a new one) within FrontPage on which you wish the media file link
to appear. Create the link by typing some link text (or using a
graphic as the link, if you wish) pressing Ctrl-K, and selecting the
.ram file from the list of files that will pop up:

Click OK, and the link is created. Then,
test your link on the web. If all has gone well, it will work.
When you are satisfied that all is as it should be, close your web and
announce the existence of the new media file to your class!
