Mounting Your Encoded Media File on a Real Server Using WS_FTP
(A Question and Answer Session)

Q. How do I get the WS_FTP client program?

A.  Download the program by right-clicking the following link, choosing "Save Target As..." and picking a location on your hard drive to which to save the file.  After you have saved this install file locally, double-click it in order to install it on your computer.  Note:  This program is for PCs only, not for Macs.  Macs should use a program like "Fetch" to ftp their files.  Call Academic Technology (ext. 2862) for help if you do not know how to get or use "Fetch," or another Mac FTP program.

You can also find this program by using any popular Internet Download service, like ShareWare.com.  WS_FTP is free to academic users.

Q. How do I connect to Palomar's Real Server?

A. Start WS_FTP and configure the initial screen as follows:

You can name the profile anything you want, but the Host Name/Address
MUST be as shown above.  Enter a Username that Academic Technology will
assign to you when you request the Real server account.  Click Ok.  WS_FTP will
respond by asking for a password:

This is NOT the same as the password you use for your Palomar College email or other accounts.  It is the password that Academic Technology assigns you when your FTP account on the Real server is initially set up. Note that the password can be entered on the initial profile screen, and if Remember Password is checked, you
will not have to enter it each time you login.

Once logged in, you will see the following:

Note the following:

  1. The Remote site (the folder on the Real server to which you want to send the file) appears on the right of the screen.

  2. The Local System folder appears on the left of the screen.  If the folder that opens by default here is not the one containing the file(s) you wish to transfer, click the ChgDir button and select the folder you want.

  3. The type of file being transferred is "Binary."  Binary must be selected to transfer an encoded media file.

Click the files on the left side of the screen you wish to transfer (holding down the Ctrl key while clicking on the file names will allow you to select multiple files).  Once selected, click the right-pointing arrow to transfer the files to the Real server.  Once the transfer has been made, click Close, the Exit to end the FTP session.

Q. What if I have trouble connecting?

A. Contact Chris Norcross in the Academic Technology department (760-744-1150 ext. 3225 - cnorcross@palomar.edu).  Chris will help you solve your problem.

The next step is to create a redirector file which can be used to create a link to your media file on a web page.
