Blackboard Training
Academic
Technology administers the technical aspects of
Palomar's online college,
and online materials for all courses.
The Blackboard Learning System can be used in both standard
face-to-face classes, hybrid classes with partial online content, and
fully online classes. Most instructors who teach online use
Blackboard to organize and present their
courses.
We encourage all instructors to gain a familiarity with
Blackboard, and for those intending to teach fully online courses we
encourage participation in the Blackboard Certificate program described
below.
Blackboard Training Sessions
- Fall 2005
Introduction to Using Blackboard

Prerequisite: None, but computer &
Windows/MacOS skills are recommended.
Description: This is an introductory
class that will address setting up and managing a Blackboard course
at Palomar. Topics to be addressed include: process for requesting
a course, roster/enrollment management, the student experience,
Blackboard navigation, course content, browser issues, pedagogical
issues including whether to use publisher’s modules or instructor
created materials. This is a basic getting started training
session!
Interacting with Students Using Blackboard

Prerequisite: Introduction to Using
Blackboard or familiarity with Blackboard.
Description: A discussion of
instructor/student and student/student interaction using
Blackboard. This will be a combination hands-on and discussion
workshop. Issues related to communicating information prior to
starting the semester such as, accurately describing your course in
a class schedule, orientations, syllabus and accessibility for
students with impairments will be discussed. The hands-on and
demonstration aspects of the workshop will cover Blackboard use of
class announcements, email, and email attachments, the discussion
board, the virtual classroom, virtual office hours, the digital drop
box, the assignment feature within Blackboard, audio/video web
content, and best practices for student communications.
Basic Test and Survey Design in Blackboard

Description: Introductory course to
creating and deploying several types of exams in Blackboard. Also
how to secure and manage test sessions, understanding gradebook
options including how to backup and export to Excel.
Advanced Test Design and Question Pools

Design in Blackboard
Description: A continuation discussion
of how to create and deploy several types of exams in Blackboard
including how to design and deploy with an emphasis on question
pools---your own or publisher supplied pools. Attendees will create
and deploy practice assessments in class. Other features such as
question randomization, test printing and other security issues will
be covered.
Blackboard Certificate Program – Teaching
On-line with Blackboard
Hosted by: B. Dowd & D. Gray
Dates: Wed., September 7th and November 2nd
plus four (4) on-line tutorials
Time: 1:00 – 3:00 p.m.
Location: LL-111 (2 in person sessions)
PD Hours: 12 hours (2 in-person plus tutorials)
Prerequisite: Introduction to Blackboard
or familiarity with Blackboard.
(Note: Certificates of completion will be
presented to those having completed the entire cohort training and
having a fully developed Blackboard course site at the end.)
Description: This is combination of
in-person and on-line training to prepare faculty to teach an
on-line course using the Blackboard Course Management System.
Faculty will work as a cohort and experience on-line education from
a student and instructor’s perspective. The two in-person sessions
will be hands-on. Participants will be enrolled in two Blackboard
courses. One created for the entire cohort as “students”
administered by Bonnie Dowd and David Gray with assignments to be
completed in the other Blackboard site where the faculty members
will actually design a course and receive feedback and personal
assistance from the academic technology team.
Tutorials to be done online will include how to
add an announcement, add a banner, manage course menu and settings,
organize a course, add documents, create and deploy several types of
exams, and gradebook options including how to use and backup.
